I am honoured to share that our research team has been awarded the prestigious André Schroeder Research Prize by the International Team for Implantology (ITI), one of the highest scientific distinctions in the field of implant dentistry and oral rehabilitation.

The award was presented on May 16th, 2026, during the ITI World Congress in Istanbul, where researchers and clinicians from around the world gathered to discuss the latest advances in implant dentistry. The prize was personally presented by ITI President Professor Ronald Jung.

The award-winning study, entitled “Effects of Smoking on Macrophage Polarization in Peri-Implantitis Lesions”, investigated how smoking influences the immune response in peri-implantitis, a disease affecting the tissues surrounding dental implants. In particular, the research explored the effects of smoking on macrophage polarization, helping to clarify some of the biological mechanisms through which tobacco exposure may contribute to peri-implant tissue destruction and disease progression.

This publication forms part of my PhD research project and reflects several years of collaborative work focused on understanding the relationship between smoking, inflammation, and peri-implant disease.

The project was developed under the scientific leadership of Professors Alberto Monje and José Nart, internationally recognized experts in periodontology and implant dentistry, whose guidance was instrumental throughout the research process.

I would also like to acknowledge the fundamental contribution of Dr Francesco Sparano, co-author of the publication, whose collaboration played a key role in the completion of this work.

Scientific progress is always the result of teamwork, mentorship, and collaboration. Receiving the André Schroeder Research Prize is therefore not only a personal milestone, but also a recognition of the collective efforts of everyone involved in this project.

As clinicians and researchers, our ultimate goal is to improve patient care through a better understanding of the biological processes that affect oral health. We hope that this research will contribute to future advances in the prevention and treatment of peri-implant diseases, particularly in patients exposed to tobacco.
